Marguerite Murphy was the sister of Detroit mayor, Governor General and US High Commissioner of the Philippines, and Michigan governor, Frank Murphy. George Ignatius Murphy was born January 20,1894, at Harbor Beach, Michigan, to John T. and Mary (Brennan) Murphy. He attended the University of Michigan where he received the A.B. degree in 1917 and the LL.B degree in 1922. While at the University he joined the Sigma Chi fraternity and served on the University's world record breaking two-mile relay track team.
